UDOT MOTOR CARRIERS DIVISION SAFETY CAMPAIGN
Business Issue
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Motor Carriers Division hired PPBH to plan and implement an integrated communications campaign to promote commercial vehicle safety in Utah. This effort would supplement national safety education and awareness initiatives and include communication with commercial vehicle drivers.
Solution
The goal of the Drive to Stay Alive campaign is to increase awareness of and adherence to safe driving practices by truck drivers in order to increase safety on highways throughout Utah. The program promotes three specific safety messages — buckle up, slow down and stay alert — which appear on billboards along high-traffic truck routes in Utah. Brochures, ball caps, window decals and other items referring to the campaign are distributed to drivers as well.
Client Value Delivered
A baseline observational study commissioned in November 2006 by UDOT Motor Carrier Division reports 64% of commercial motor vehicle drivers (CMV) in Utah are wearing their seat belts, over 56% nationally. In 2003 the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration showed truck driver seat belt usage at 48%. That means Utah CMV driver seat belt usage is up 33% from 2003, in large part due to the outreach campaign developed by PPBH.
